Weekly Nomz 3

4/9/23 - 10/9/23

Hi there and welcome to my weekly nomz. If you are new here, this is a weekly blog post about the various information content that I've consumed throughout the week. I'm not actually sure who follows or reads this as I do not have any trackers on this site, and if you are reading this, I hope you are enjoying this series. I am intending to add a 'like' and 'comment' feature to this site in the future so that you can interact with me and let me know what you think of my posts. Anyways, let's get started!

The first article that I wish to share this week is titled Elements of exceptional startups. In the article, the author reveals 5 elements that he believes are essential for a startup to not only be successful, but to be one of the best. While reading through the article, I couldn't help but reflect on my own personal experience at Horangi, a cyber security startup based in Singapore and was recently acquired by Bitdefender. I remember being at one of the quarterly all-hands meeting and everyone was so involved in asking questions about his plans and growth status of the company. As an intern, I couldn't really appreciate the importance of such a meeting and merely sat in as a spectator. Now, I realise how important it is to constantly evaluate the competency of your CEO and the executive team in order to ensure both the company's and your own personal success is on track. Moving forward, I hope to apply these elements of thought and discernment in my future career if I ever choose to work in a startup.

The next article is an opinion piece on how to maximise your software engineering growth. The Engineer's Guide to Career Growth is a lengthy article but I found it to be very insightful and helpful. I especially liked the part where the author talks about the importance of maximising your growth in technical expertise regardless of whether you are a manager or an individual contributor. As with most things in life, being patient and consistent is key to maximising growth and learning. Once that is achieved, I believe that the right opportunities for career progression will naturally open up. I would encourage anyone to give this a read regardless of your current career stage.

Lastly, I listened to the very first episode of the podcast series 'We Study Billionaires'. This is part of my learning progress to understand more about the world of investing and finance. I will also be making use of the latest Arm IPO as an opportunity to apply the things I've learned. I am hoping that this will be a fruitful journey for me.

That is all for this week! And as always, thank you for reading.
