Weekly Nomz 8

Hi there! Welcome back to another weekly nomz. This week will be slightly different from the last few editions. This week, I came across a LinkedIn post by Alex Nguyen about the top 8 newsletters that he subscribes to as an engineer. I read through some of the articles in the newsletter 'The Developing Dev' and I will focus on sharing articles that I found interesting and helpful. I hope you enjoy this edition!

The first article that caught my attention was Jordan Cutler's career growth story. Some of the actionable items that I took away from his story would be to:

  1. Create a system that you can work with you manager to help track and improve visibility on your growth
  2. Improve my documentation skills – doesn't need to be constrained to just code; it can include personal reflections, engineering processes, etc.
  3. Be subject domain expert

On the second point about improving my documentation, I agree that it is extremely beneficial to communicate your presence and work within the team. This helps set you up for success when you are looking for the next promotion. The following articles Be Visible and Why Engineers Need To Write are short but succinct reads on the reasons and benefits of writing.

That's it from me about the 'The Developing Dev' newsletter. Let's move on to some other nomz that I found interesting this week.

Why We Don’t Ship Software as Fast as We Used To is a nice article that talks about the reasons why software development has slowed down over the years. The last few sentences are a great summary of the article:

Adding more people and abstractions slows you down. But while a 12-person team might not move as fast as a two-person team, the former is much faster at doing more.

Indeed, the world of tech has been producing many times more than it ever did in the past. And I'm glad to be a part of this.

Lastly, I started and just finished listening to the audiobook Breath by James Nestor. It was a great listen and I highly recommend it. The body is truly fascinating and to gain mastery over something as simple as breathing is something I hope to hone one day.

That is all for this week. I hope you've found my nomz useful and interesting. While there isn't any way to directly interact with my posts yet, you can always reach out to me at my email. Cheers and see you again next week!
